What it is
Hard water is water with a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. It isn't a health hazard, but it's hard on your plumbing, appliances and cleaning routine.
Signs to look for
- White crust on faucets and showerheads
- Spots and film on dishes and glass shower doors
- Soap and shampoo that won't lather
- Dry-feeling skin and dull hair after a shower
- Scale inside kettles, water heaters and dishwashers
What causes it
Water picks up calcium and magnesium as it moves through soil and rock. How hard your water is depends on your source, and a private well can be very different from town water nearby.
How we fix it
The usual fix is a water softener, which swaps the hardness minerals out as water enters the house. It's often paired with whole-home filtration.
Typical package: Whole-Home Filter + Softener (typical installed cost $3,000–$7,000). The test tells us how hard your water is so the softener is sized correctly.
Prices are typical installed ranges. Your exact price comes after the free test. See all pricing.
