What it is
A metallic or bitter taste is one of the most common reasons people stop drinking their tap water. The good news is that the cause can usually be found with a simple test.
Signs to look for
- A metal, bitter or coin-like taste
- Taste is worse first thing in the morning
- Orange, brown or blue-green stains on fixtures
- Coffee and tea taste off
What causes it
The usual causes are iron or manganese in the water, or acidic (low pH) water picking up copper from your pipes. Water sitting in pipes overnight can make the taste stronger.
How we fix it
We fix the cause, not just the taste. That might be iron filtration or a pH neutralizer. If you mainly want better drinking water, Single-Fixture Reverse Osmosis (estimated installed cost $950–$3,000) at the kitchen sink is a simple option.
Prices are typical installed ranges. Your exact price comes after the free test. See all pricing.
